Zera means “seed”, a promising and auspicious name for the success and future of the cheetah population. She was originally from Zululand but kept in captivity for most of her 7 year life before being introduced into Gondwana Game Reserve where she is being re-wilded and given a dedicated reserve with ample space. She is aloof, calm and habituated to people and vehicles, and has the most beautiful amber eyes. She will make a perfect mother to the cubs she will bear.

Zinga, meaning “the wanderer”, is the first male in the GCF’s Cheetah Project, and turned 6 years old in 2017. He is completely wild, secretive and an excellent hunter. He originates from the Eastern Cape but has now made Gondwana Game Reserve his home. Hopes are high that he will father many future cheetah generations. The cubs he will sire will have the best possible genes.

Zimbini, which means ‘number 2’, is a younger but feisty female from the Orange Free State, and in 2017 she turned 2 years old. She is a progeny of a re-wilding programme herself, and thus gives the Gondwana Conservation Foundation real hope for the success of the Cheetah Programme. She is wild and shares the same dedicated reserve with Zera. Her courage and fiery character will hopefully be passed onto her cubs.

Neither graceful nor beautiful, warthogs are nonetheless remarkable animals. They are found in most of Africa and are widely distributed in East Africa. They are the only pigs able to live in areas without water for several months of the year. By tolerating a higher-than-normal body temperature, the warthog is able to conserve moisture inside its body that might otherwise be used for cooling.
